How eBay fees work in 2026
When an item sells on eBay.com, most sellers pay two charges: a final value fee, which is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, and a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, or $0.40 on orders over $10. Listing is free for your first 250 listings each month.
The part sellers miss is what eBay counts as the total amount of the sale. It is the item price, plus any shipping and handling you charge, plus the sales tax eBay collects from the buyer. A $30 item with $5 shipping and 8% sales tax is charged on $37.80, not $30. At 13.6% plus $0.40, that sale costs you $5.54 in eBay fees.
Final value fee
13.6% of the total sale in most categories, up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the part above. Some categories pay less and a few pay more (tables below).
Per-order fee
$0.30 when the order total is $10 or less, $0.40 when it is over $10. Athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more skip it.
Insertion fee
Without a Store you get 250 free listings a month, then pay $0.35 per listing. Good 'Til Cancelled listings count again every time they renew.
Promoted Listings
General campaigns charge the ad rate you set on the total sale, including shipping and tax, only when the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad.
International fee
Charged on the total sale when the buyer's registered or delivery address is outside the US. US sellers who use eBay International Shipping don't pay it.
Performance surcharges
Below Standard accounts pay an extra 6% final value fee (7% after four months in a row). A Very High rate of item-not-as-described returns adds 5% in that category.

eBay fee examples with real numbers
Three common sales worked through line by line. Each total matches what the calculator returns for the same inputs.
1. A $34.99 phone case with a promoted listing
No Store, free shipping, buyer pays 8% sales tax, 5% ad rate, item cost $9.50.
- Total sale: $34.99 x 1.08$37.79
- Final value fee: 13.6% of $37.79$5.14
- Per-order fee (order over $10)$0.40
- Promoted listing: 5% of $37.79$1.89
- Total eBay fees$7.43
- Profit: $34.99 - $7.43 - $9.50$18.06
eBay keeps 21.2% of the price. The 5% ad costs $1.89 on its own, more than four times the per-order fee.
2. Sneakers that sell for $180
No Store, $12 shipping charged, 6% sales tax, pair cost $120, label cost $11.
- Total sale: ($180 + $12) x 1.06$203.52
- Final value fee: 8% (sale is $150 or more)$16.28
- Per-order fee$0.00
- Total eBay fees$16.28
- Profit: $192 - $16.28 - $120 - $11$44.72
The 8% rate depends on the total sale, tax included. If that total lands under $150, you pay 13.6% plus the $0.40 per-order fee instead.
3. A $650 laptop: no Store vs Basic Store
Free shipping, 7% sales tax, so the total sale is $650 x 1.07 = $695.50.
- No Store: 13.6% of $695.50 + $0.40$94.99
- Basic Store: 7.35% of $695.50 + $0.40$51.52
- Saved on this one sale$43.47
One laptop sale a month more than pays for a Basic Store at $27.95 on monthly renewal.
8 ways to pay less in eBay fees
- Check the category rate before you set a price. Guitars and basses pay 6.7%, most categories 13.6%, books and music 15.3%. List the item where it belongs and build that rate into your price.
- Do the Store math. A Basic Store cuts most categories from 13.6% to 12.7%. That 0.9-point cut covers the $27.95 monthly price once you sell about $3,106 a month ($2,439 on yearly renewal at $21.95). In electronics, where the rate drops to 9.35%, break-even is closer to $658 a month.
- Don't move margin into shipping. eBay charges the final value fee on shipping and handling too, so a lower item price with higher shipping costs the same in fees.
- Use eBay International Shipping for overseas buyers. US sellers who use it skip the 1.65% international fee on eligible listings.
- Set ad rates from your margin. Dynamic ad rates follow eBay's daily suggestion, and the fee is taken from the total sale with tax. Run your price through the calculator with the ad rate filled in before you switch a campaign on.
- Stay Above Standard. A Below Standard rating adds 6% to your final value fees the following month, and a Very High item-not-as-described return rate adds 5% in that category.
- Watch your free listing allowance. After 250 listings a month without a Store you pay $0.35 each, and Good 'Til Cancelled listings use up a free listing every time they renew.
- Claim fee credits on cancelled or refunded orders. eBay can credit back final value fees under its fee credits policy, but only on sales that qualify, so check each refund.
Can you sell AliExpress products on eBay?
eBay allows dropshipping only when you fulfil orders from a wholesale supplier. Its dropshipping policy is direct about the rest: "listing an item on eBay and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay." AliExpress is a marketplace, so buying from AliExpress after each eBay sale and shipping straight to your buyer breaks that rule. You also stay responsible for delivery within your stated time frame either way.
That is why most AliDrop sellers run their own Shopify store instead. AliDrop finds products from AliExpress, Alibaba, Temu and US & EU suppliers, imports them to Shopify and automates order fulfillment. There is no 13.6% final value fee on your own store, though you still pay for your Shopify plan and payment processing, so run both sets of numbers before you pick a channel.
You can try AliDrop for $1 for the first 7 days.

Preguntas frecuentes
How much does eBay take from a sale in 2026?
For most categories without a Store, eBay takes 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) plus a $0.40 per-order fee on orders over $10. On a $50 sale with free shipping and no tax, that is $6.80 + $0.40 = $7.20, or 14.4% of the price.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, any shipping and handling charged to the buyer, and sales tax. A $30 item with $5 shipping and 8% tax is charged on $37.80.
What is the eBay per-order fee?
It is $0.30 for orders of $10.00 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10.00, added on top of the percentage fee. It is not charged on athletic shoes when the total sale is $150 or more.
Is an eBay Store worth it to cut fees?
Only above a certain volume. A Basic Store ($27.95 a month on monthly renewal, $21.95 on yearly) drops most categories from 13.6% to 12.7%, so the rate cut pays for itself at about $3,106 in monthly sales on monthly renewal. In electronics and computers, where Store rates fall to 9.35% or 7.35%, it pays off much sooner.
How are Promoted Listings fees calculated?
For general campaigns you pick an ad rate between 2% and 100%. eBay charges that percentage of the total sale, including shipping and tax, only when the item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad. A 5% rate on a $37.79 total sale costs $1.89.
What is the eBay international fee?
It is 1.65% of the total sale, charged when the buyer's registered address or delivery address is outside the US. US sellers who use eBay International Shipping on eligible listings don't pay it.
Why are my eBay fees higher than the calculator shows?
The usual reasons: your account was rated Below Standard (an extra 6%, or 7% after four months in a row), your item-not-as-described return rate is Very High (an extra 5%), you went past your free listings and paid $0.35 insertion fees, or you added upgrades such as Bold or a subtitle. eBay also charges a $20 dispute fee when you are found responsible for a chargeback.
Can I dropship from AliExpress to eBay?
Not under eBay's current policy. eBay allows dropshipping from wholesale suppliers, but says buying an item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed. AliExpress is a marketplace, so most AliExpress dropshippers sell through their own Shopify store instead.
